Tsuchida Yasuhiko

Tsuchida Yasuhiko, also known as Tsuchy, was born in 1969 in Osaka, Japan. In 1989 he sojourned to Europe and since 1992 has lived on the famous island of Murano, Italy, working as artistic director and designer at the Franco Schiavon Glass Factory. Adapting the techniques of those masters that surround him, Tsuchida is forging a unique and personal style, combining a strong eastern sense of beauty with a contemporary, urban edge.

His color palette is infused with a randomness that is refreshing. His harmonious, luminescent half-moon vases or his more chromatically casual Funtime Cups reflect how Tsuchida navigates through the traditional world of glassblowing with a modern instinct. Vetro Magazine recently wrote about his work, He is a perfect craftsman who understands his craft in all its details, and makes perfect use of the possibilities which each material offers him. In order to render an idea,

Tsuchida combines highly advanced techniques such as the Incalmo technique (combining different vessels) and the Battuto finish (faceted cuts reminiscent of a hammered effect), sometimes shifting the center and the blowpipe up to three times. The above techniques combined with a powerful use of color, gives each work its own unique personality, making it easy to recognize and appreciate the work of Tsuchida Yasuhiko.

In Tsuchy's latest glass work from the Windows and Camouflage collection, he delves into free form. The shapes are organic and fluid. The colors are bright and spontaneous. His literal titles seem to personify the work and evoke a deeper meaning. The exhibit also includes six new paintings by Tsuchy. He translates his edginess into his paintings with playful and provocative imagery. The murrini-method he employs in his glass becomes mosaic-like in his paintings. He adheres sand-belt paper to the surface and paints over it to pay homage to the materials he uses in his glass work. The finished effect is truly unique.
