Glass, despite its constant presence in our modern world, remains mysterious. Glass interacts with light in a manner unlike any other medium. Like other materials, it can cast shadows creating a sense of drama, yet its ability to both reflect and transmit light is unparalleled. Most captivating still is the process of its creation, from a molten liquid state into a solid finished work of art. Strength and fragility are inherent in the medium, permanent yet delicate, always to be handled with care. It is these unique properties of glass that continue to incite wonder in our culture. After ten years of blowing glass, the medium continues to challenge me both physically and mentally. Physically, larger heavier pieces test my strength and agility, as the fluidity of the medium requires a grace of continuous motion. Mentally, the process demands focused awareness and a presence to each moment to be able to respond to the glass and its behavior with every move. My art pieces are testament to my ongoing love of glass. The ability of glass to transform an environment from the ordinary to the wondrous is fascinating. As such, I work to envelop the same sense mystery with my glass creations that captivate viewers. | |
